National Reconciliation Week 2012
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is celebrated between 27 May and 3 June. This year's theme, 'Let's Talk Recognition', focuses on how Australians can better recognise each other and the contributions, cultures and histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Event information is at the NRW website.

 

Social Inclusion

Walk Together
Refugee Week 2012 will be held from 17-23 June. This year's theme is 'Restoring Hope'. Events include Welcome to Australia's Walk Together being held nationally on Saturday 23 June.

Chair of Social Inclusion Board Retires
Patricia Faulkner AO has retired as Chair of the Australian Social Inclusion Boardeffective 1 June 2012. Minister for Social Inclusion, the Hon Mark Butler MP thanked Ms Faulkner for her strong leadership of the Board and advice to Government during her time as Chair. More details are at the Social Inclusion website.

Vinnies CEO Sleeps Out
St Vincent de Paul Society National Council CEO and Australian Social Inclusion Board Member, Dr John Falzon, will be joining other CEOs, senior business and community leaders on Thursday 21 June for the annual Vinnies CEO Sleepout to raise awareness of homelessness.

Free Calls for All
In April the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), committed to putting in place new arrangements so that from 2015, calls to 1800 and 13/1300 numbers from mobile phones will be free or the cost of a local call. This change will make a positive difference to vulnerable people who rely on mobile phones. ACMA made their decision after considering submissions including from the Australian Social Inclusion Board. 

'Connect For' Conference
The Connect For: improved outcomes for vulnerable young people conference is a response to children and young people experiencing barriers to learning and development. It brings together government, schools and the community sector to explore innovative ways to support and enrich the lives of young people. The conference will be held in Melbourne on 25 and 26 June.

Office for the Not-for-Profit Sector

Volunteering Video Competition
There is still time to enter the Volunteering Video Competition for the chance to win cameras, camera equipment and editing software. The competition closes 22 July 2012.

ACNC Transition Arrangements
The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) will commence operations from 1 October 2012. The Government has announced a two staged approach. For further information please see the Staging of the Introduction of Regulatory Reform for the Not-for-Profit Sector media release.

AIME's Australian Story
The April edition of Joined Up included a story on the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME). AIME were featured on ABC Television'sAustralian Story this week.

National Compact

Consultation Code Survey
Thanks to the 525 organisations that participated in the survey to inform the Consultation Code which the Not-for-Profit Sector Reform Council is leading. 66% of respondents indicated they have limited or no engagement with government and around half would like to be more involved. Preferred engagement methods include discussion, workshops and online technologies. Detailed survey results are at the National Compact website.

National Compact Partners
Thanks to those organisations who have recently signed up as National Compact Partners. The National Compact now has 809 Compact Partners. If your organisation is not-for-profit and you would like to learn more or sign up, please visit www.nationalcompact.gov.au.

Promoting Reconciliation
National Compact partner, Indigenous Community Volunteers (ICV) is a grassroots charity committed to closing the gap on Indigenous disadvantage and promoting reconciliation. For more information or to volunteer go to the ICV website.

Recent Research and Articles

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare recently published What Works to Overcome Indigenous Disadvantage.

Inspire Foundation's report, Counting the Cost: The Impact of Young Men's Mental Health on the Australian Economy was launched this week by Minister Mark Butler.

Wesley Mission recently released Keeping minds well: Caring till it hurts, a report which examines the issues facing people who are caring for a family member with a mental health problem.

The Government recently announced the creation of a National Children's Commissioner within the Australian Human Rights Commission. See the Attorney-General's website.
