THE POWER BEHIND THREE SIMPLE WORDS: ARE YOU OK?

September 6, 2025

by Dr. Maria La Pietra

Are You OK? – Why These Words Matter More Than We Realise
We live in a world where “How are you?” has almost become a greeting rather than a genuine question. Most of the time, we answer on autopilot: “I’m fine, thanks.” But behind those words, people can be carrying invisible burdens – stress, grief, mental illness, family struggles, or simply the weight of feeling alone. That’s why days like RUOK? Day are so important. They remind us that a simple, caring question can change – or even save – someone’s life.

Why Asking Matters
“Are you OK?” might feel small, but it has the power to open doors. When asked with genuine curiosity and compassion, it can help someone step out of silence and share what they’re going through. Research shows that connection is one of the strongest protective factors against depression, anxiety, and suicide. Sometimes, knowing that someone cares enough to notice can be the turning point in a very dark moment.

Beyond a One-Day Question
RUOK? Day is not just about wearing yellow or posting hashtags—it’s about building a culture where people feel safe to be honest about how they’re really doing. It’s about listening without judgment, not rushing to give advice, and walking alongside someone when life feels heavy. Asking “Are you OK?” should not be reserved for one day a year – it should be part of how we look after each other every day.

How to Ask and Support

Here are some simple ways to approach the conversation:

  • Choose the right moment: Somewhere calm and unhurried.
  • Ask genuinely: “I’ve noticed you seem a bit different lately—are you OK?”
  • Listen deeply: Let silence sit, and don’t interrupt.
  • Encourage action: If they’re struggling, gently suggest support – whether that’s talking to a
friend, a GP, or a counsellor.
  • Check in again: A follow-up shows you truly care.
    The Heart of It
RUOK? Day reminds us that we all have a role to play in supporting mental health. None of us are immune to struggle, and none of us are meant to go through life alone. Sometimes the smallest act – a quiet question, a patient ear, a simple text saying, “Thinking of you” – can be the thread of connection that holds someone together.

So as RUOK? Day approaches, ask yourself: Who in my life might need me to check in? And when you do ask – be ready to really listen. Because behind those three words lies the potential for healing, hope, and life-saving change.

Reflective Question
Who in your life could benefit from you asking, “Are you OK?” – and how will you make space to truly listen to their answer?
